The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Since its founding, the Newberry Library has had a department concerned with building maintenance and security. Over the years, the department has reported to the Librarian, the Controller, and to the Associate (later Deputy) Librarian. In 1983, an Administrative Services Division, including security and maintenance, was formed under Robert J. Callahan. The Division was soon disbanded and Facilities Manager Richard J.
